Who We Are
John Scheman, Philanthropist

Do it Foundation, a Scheman Family Foundation is a Costa Rican nonprofit foundation founded by John Scheman in 2005, focused on education, health and leading an effort to create awareness of the needs of people with physical disabilities, delivering a wheelchair to every child, teen and adult in Costa Rica who needs one, but cannot afford one. For those people, we give hope, mobility, and freedom.

Our Mission
Provide quality of life by bringing the gift of education, health and mobility to people with disabilities by giving them an empowering tool.

The Do It Foundation, a registered Costa Rican Non Profit Foundation was founded in 2005 as part of a charitable extension of Grupo Do It, headed by John Scheman. Scheman detected infrastructure needs in rural schools and local health centers, the collaboration with the community began by sending building materials and work crews from the Papagayo Do It Center to make these public spaces safe and promote health and education. Soon after he became aware there were many people in Guanacaste with mobility issues, Scheman then created a partnership with the Free Wheelchair Mission of California, to date Scheman and his team have imported, assembled and distributed wheelchairs to over 20,000 families throughout Costa Rica and southern Nicaragua. The goal is to provide a free wheelchair as a gift of mobility to all those who don’t have the resources to buy one.

John Scheman has been a pioneer in the real estate development of Guanacaste, starting in 1994 developing the infrastructure, roads, power, water, lot segregation and marketing of the Urbanisation Vistas del Pacifico and continue in 2001 when he started a large and very ambitious commercial center in Comunidad, Guanacaste where he built and operates the largest heavy material import and retail hardware store in Guanacaste. Through the years John has proven to be one of the true pioneers transitioning Guanacaste from an agricultural providence to what it is today. John holds dual citizenship with Costa Rica and the United States, is bilingual and is married and has six children that were born in Costa Rica.

John founded the Papagayo Do it Center, is President of the Do It Center Foundation and a trustee for the Guanacaste Community Fund, (GCF) a trust fund created by the Costa Rica-USA Foundation for Cooperation (CRUSA) to be the community foundation for the province of Guanacaste. John Scheman also is a member of the Lions Club of Atenas, for 14 years, Grupo Do It and the Do It Foundation has worked side by side with the Lions Clubs of Costa Rica and Hospital Clinica Biblica to help them make an even bigger impact in the communities. One act of service, one encouraging word, one gift of generosity is often all it takes to bring hope where it’s needed.
