Each year, a team from Right at Home – a U.S.-based medical services franchise – travels to Costa Rica on a special journey known as the Vision Trip. Coordinated in partnership with Free Wheelchair Mission and the Do It Foundation, this initiative brings together volunteers and local collaborators to deliver the life-changing gift of mobility to individuals in need.
The planning process spans two months and involves everything from identifying eligible wheelchair recipients across the country to selecting the correct chair sizes, coordinating logistics, and assembling each unit for delivery. It’s a hands-on mission powered by teamwork, compassion, and a shared commitment to restoring dignity and independence.
In 2018, the Vision Trip took place from October 22 to 26. The group included twelve volunteers from Right at Home, two representatives from Free Wheelchair Mission, and three members of the Do It Foundation team. Over the course of five days, the team delivered nearly 60 wheelchairs across the regions of Liberia, Bebedero-Cañas, Bijagua, Canalete (Upala), and Puntarenas – some directly to families’ homes, others through small local events organized in collaboration with the community.
Deliveries were made possible thanks to the support of local partners, including the Municipalities of Puntarenas and Upala, Papagayo Do It Center, Grupo Do It, Do It Lagar, and churches in Bagaces and Bebedero. In every location, volunteers helped assemble wheelchairs and experienced firsthand the joy and gratitude of each recipient.
For everyone involved, the Vision Trip offers more than service – it’s an opportunity to see the world through a different lens, to build lasting friendships, and to witness the impact of collective action.
